PRODUCT DESIGN

Yoga International

Redesigning the online course experience with a refreshed user interface, clear progress feedback, speed-to-play improvements, and surfaced completion incentives.

This redesign launched in March 2025. Experience Yoga International courses on our website or download the mobile app in the Apple App Store or Google Play.

How might we inspire more users to engage with our high quality online courses?

Yoga International offers 300+ courses and challenges for members, alongside a deep library of practice content. Yet course engagement lagged—learners weren’t taking full advantage of the breadth of our continuing education offerings. We identified that the web and mobile experiences weren’t showcasing courses in a compelling way or clearly communicating key value drivers like continuing education credits and completion certificates.

With that in mind, we set out to design a modern course experience: a beautiful, streamlined interface that reduces friction to start, streams reliably, tracks progress clearly, and highlights what learners can earn by completing a course.

Project Impact

I partnered with Yoga International’s Head of Product and our content team to analyze course consumption and completion across web and mobile. We mapped drop-off points and pain signals to pinpoint four high-impact opportunities: a modernized course UI, faster time-to-play, clearer progress feedback, and more visible certificates and continuing education credits.

Outcome #1

Course Completion

Drove an 83% increase in course completion, measured by completion certificate downloads.
Outcome #2

Engagement

Increased engaged views by 47%, measured by course module consumption.

Creating a Warmer, More Premium Experience

Modernizing the User Interface

A major drawback of our course experience was an outdated interface. Learners expect elegance as well as functionality, and user conversations reflected the aesthetic–usability effect: when the UI looked dated, users assumed the experience would be clunky or unreliable before they ever hit play.

Bold Course Imagery: Replaced outdated visuals with striking course cover art and a dynamic scroll effect.

Video-first modules: Swapped text-only module lists for video thumbnails—more like the streaming experiences users expect.

Warmer brand expression: Brought Yoga International’s warm palette and mandala motifs into the course UI to feel inviting and on-brand

Bringing the Content to Life

Providing Context at a Glance

In the previous experience, it was hard to understand what a course was about at a glance. We added course subtitles and key features so learners can quickly gauge what to expect—without needing to open and read the full overview.

Make "Play" Effortless

Getting users into content in seconds

Speed-to-play is a key driver of engagement. The faster learners reach the first video, the more likely they are to enjoy the experience and continue. Every extra step or second before playback is a chance to drop off.

Speed-to-Play Fix #1

Start/Resume CTA

Start Course CTA scrolls user to the first section of the course. Resume Course CTA starts player.
Speed-to-Play Fix #2

Invitation to Play

Boosted play clicks with thumbnails, class info, and a “Play” hover state.

Progress You Can Feel

Clear feedback that keeps users moving

To help learners stay oriented and motivated, we made progress impossible to miss. We increased the visibility of the progress bar, added completion checkmarks for finished modules, and introduced a “completed” variant for sections so learners can instantly see what’s done and what’s next. Beyond clarity, these small moments of feedback add a sense of momentum—turning progress into a subtle reward that encourages learners to keep going and finish the course.

Yoga International Course Progress Flow

Make the Reward Worth Finishing

Surface continuing education credits and certificates as clear completion incentives

Many learners didn’t realize what they could earn by completing a course, Yoga Alliance continuing education units(CEUs) and a Yoga International certificate. We brought these outcomes forward in the course experience so the value is clear upfront and reinforced throughout the journey. By making credentials more visible and tangible, we helped learners understand why finishing matters and added an extra layer of motivation to complete the full course.
